Backwoods Forefront

Acrylic Paint on 40cm x 50 cm (~15.75in x 19.5in) wooden panel. Tallinn, Estonia. 09.2020.

This is my second completed painting in 2020. I had some down-time from painting though, and was seven months since my first painting this year.

If you are familiar with my work, then you might notice that this is not my first time painting a scene like this. I have tried a few variations over the years. It is a scene I like and it is possible to see my progression from painting to painting. My first attempt was not the greatest, but I am not afraid to share it for the sake of learning. I promise I am creative....I don't always paint the same scenes over and over again! 😅 Each time that I paint this, I bring a new set of skills and a fresh vision.

So why do I keep coming back to this scene specifically? For starters, I love painting landscapes. But not traditional landscapes. I applaud artists who have the talent for realism. These artists blow me away when they recreate a landscape in great detail. I, however, I am not one of these artists 😂 Partly due to skill, and mostly due to choice. I enjoy painting scenes that you won't normally see during a stroll in the forest, or in photographs of your favorite parks. If you want to see realism, then just go there!! If you want to see a surrealist landscape, or something that's a bit strange, then look at my paintings instead 😎

I put a lot of texture into this one, hopefully you can see in this progress photo. I used a lot of paint in the sky and then started to form the trees. The center of the sky was already starting to dry, that's why I couldn't flatten it out completely. I wasn't sure what to think at first, but in the end the circular lines add a cool texture to the trees as well. Also, there is a groovy melting feel with the sky around the trees!!

Have you ever seen a green sky? Well me neither, but here is your chance! I try to choose colors that will catch your eye and bring your imagination to new heights. The white and yellows might bring your mind to the moon or sun in the sky, but as your eye moves outwards the sky turns green!! I hope it doesn't mess with your mind too much 😝 You may also have trouble focusing on other parts of the painting. It's not an accident. Usually I add a strong focal point to my paintings, and then do as much as I can around it to pull your eye away. You might even feel an urge to try and peek around the trees.

In one of my recent blog posts - Two-toned Transition - I spoke about why I paint so many mushrooms, so I won't go into too much detail about that. I continue to fit them into this green sky/forest scene because of the color scheme. When I use these colors I feel like I am dancing around the green with blue and yellow, offset with a bit of red...it always gets to me!

Once again, thank you so much for reading!

You can check out my progress over the years below, as promised.
