Some Insights into the Pinstripes 😉
Hey Everyone, I'm back with another installment of my playing card project. Let's take a closer look into the back design this time!
I was inspired to design the front of the cards much earlier than the back. That's where my focus was to create a unique set of playing cards. At that time in 2018, I slapped together a quick back design just so that I could print out a decent looking prototype 😅 The newest back design you see above was done in 2020.
This true back design came about when I really put it in my mind to bring these cards to market. I knew they would need a catchy and fitting design on the front AND the back. I chose stripes as a theme, of course.
The design wasn't fitting with horizontal stripes across both sides, so you will find verticals on the back for contrast. I learned a lot of new skills in this design process, using a program called Inkscape. It is used for creating vector files, and the basic design is a compilation of shapes which I manipulated to make the final product. I built up the design from the blank card template, provided by United States Playing Card Company. (It also shows where all the cuts will be on the paper when I send my cards for mass production!)
The main way I found to harmonize the front and back was by having the small horizontal pinstripes on the edges of the back:
These stripes line up exactly with the front of the cards! By using basic shapes on both sides, I am able to keep a minimalist feel to the overall design. What about those triangles though?? Well, I dunno really.. 😂 Those are one of the aspects that came out of my mind. It's hard to explain how they got there, but I think it turned out for the best. What do you think?
To complete the back design, there is another main element - the black border. This helps to keep the same relative shape as the front of the cards, otherwise it looks like there is too much empty space on the back! The border is also a quick reference to your mind as your flipping through the cards, to know which way it is facing 😊
I am trying to keep my posts a bit shorter....otherwise I just find myself rambling on. I really hope you enjoyed this one!
Until next time!
