Pinstripe Playing Cards - The Story

Updated: Feb 13, 2021

Some insight in my newest project!

Hey Everyone! I am continuing my blog posts, but I am moving on from my Estonian Collection of paintings. I am back in action with Pinstripe Playing Cards. Many of you have seen these cards already, since it seems like I won't shut up about them these days 😅 Thank you all for your support so far as I bring this project to life!

'Why playing cards?' you might ask.

Well, it all started when I was making and designing card games. I have a notebook full of designs and sketches of different game ideas. Board games and card games. You might remember a couple of years ago in 2018, when I was advertising my game Slice the Watermelon. This was the closest I ever came to producing my own game. I spent much of 2017 designing the rules and creating the art. I learned that I enjoy the art process way more than game design. I started to fall out of love with that project because of the rules and mechanics and testing that are required for producing such a game. At the end of the day, I am an artist, and once I drew all the art for Slice the Watermelon and printed some copies, I lost my momentum.

Playing cards are versatile, with many existing games already. Cards are also well established in human nature. They are so mystical, and have been around in many forms for a very long time. You and I use a lot of idioms and phrases related to playing cards, sometime without even knowing it! You might have an ace up your sleeve, or something good will happen if you play your cards right 😉 Most importantly for me, playing cards allow me a creative outlet for art and design, without having to focus on rules and gameplay. I don't have to worry about making a fun game, I am more focused on creating a good design.

My interest in cards runs deep. In my youngest days I remember playing cards with my Grandmother, who taught me most of the games I know today. And of course, this is how most of us passed the time in the pre-digital era 😊 As I got older, I collected baseball cards and played many different Collectible Card Games such as Magic: the Gathering.

I really like functional art. By functional art, I mean the shoes that I paint - something to wear and show off to your friends. Or the games that I made like Slice the Watermelon - bringing people together to enjoy art and the company of others.

Therefore in the spirit of functional art, I present to you: Pinstripe Playing Cards!

☮♥RSM.
