Sunshine Daydream

Updated: Jan 7, 2021

Acrylic Paint on 40cm x 50 cm (~15.75in x 19.5in) wooden panel. Tallinn, Estonia. 2018.

This was a fun little piece I did as the summer was winding down in 2018.

I will start this one with the title. If you know me, than you probably know I listen to the Grateful Dead a lot. The title of this painting comes from their song Sunshine Daydream. It is a fun upbeat song that always gets my attention :D I went along with the theme of bright colors and I imagined where I would be if I was having a Sunshine Daydream! This field in the middle of it all is what I came up with.

In this painting, I was really experimenting with the clouds. I have painted clouds in the past, but I must admit I was not always good at it ;) I tried out this particular technique with a round circular brush. Picking up different colors and laying them down in an overlapping pattern. (You will see this technique again in my painting Space Jellies but for a different purpose!)

Usually I do not end up with a completed painting when I am experimenting, but this one struck me once it was done :)

The foreground is very simple in Sunshine Daydream, just the grass. And just tall enough to overlap the clouds on your right side. It pushes the clouds into the background to give some depth. My inspiration for this is Estonia! It is quite a flat country (being so close to the Baltic sea) which I emulated here. Nevertheless, the countryside is beautiful. In some ways it reminds me of the Eastern Shore of Maryland where I was born. There is a joke about the Netherlands that can easily be applied to Estonia in this context:

Estonia is so flat, you can watch your dog run away from home for three days.

*crickets*

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this insight into Sunshine Daydream. I will drop some links below in case you are interested :)
