Two-toned Transition

Updated: Jan 7, 2021

Acrylic Paint on two 160cm x 58 cm (5.25ft x 2ft) wooden panels. Tallinn, Estonia. 02.2020.

Here we are towards the end of 2020 but my blog is finally catching up. You might have already seen me post this painting before on social media, but here is your chance to get some insight into "Two-toned Transition"

"Two-toned Transition" is my first painting of 2020, and to be frank, it was my first completed painting after a long delay in my Estonian Collection. As you read in my last post, I spent most of 2019 working my bum off. It turned out for the best, as I earned a promotion and grew professionally. I owe a lot of credit to my team now, they are motivated and hardworking. Because of them I am working normal hour days and have time to paint in the evenings and on weekends 😉

You could say "Two-toned Transition" is the beginning of Estonian Collection Part Deux. It also represents the transition of myself and my skills. I have always enjoyed painting, but I do know that I have come a long way over the years. Some of my work (especially the early stuff) was hit or miss. I am hoping its hits from here on out 😁

This painting is biiiiig. Not as big as my ceiling mural, but I still wanted to do something at a larger scale. My European friends will have a sense of scale by recognizing the light switch and wall outlet. For my friends in the rest of the world, that's a light switch and wall outlet next to the painting 😝 It stands at 5 feet 4 inches tall, so it is just about one foot shorter than me! This is made from upcycled materials (some piece of furniture to be not so exact). I am not ashamed to admit that I found these wooden panels next to the dumpster. The only downside to using furniture are the small holes you see toward the top.

You would normally find me finger painting a background like this, but for "Two-toned Transition" I had to pick up a brush. I wanted to have complimentary paintings with bold color, but I knew that one color across the sky just would not do! I played around with lights and darks, cold and warmth to bring these two panels together.

Monochrome....or so you thought! The two panels fit together nicely with the balance of semi-monochromatic colors. I promise I have more than two colors of paint 😅 Stage Right: white > yellow > orange (yellowed and normal varieties) > crimson red > sienna brown > burnt umber. Stage Left: white > pistachio (yum!) > sky and cerulean blues > sap green > turquois > hooker's green. To fit the panels even closer, you will notice that the tree spills over onto the blue side at the top, and the cacti spill over to the red at the bottom. Spider and web are present on both sides for dramatic effect! Depending on where your mind is while reading this, then you will also see a feminine side and a masculine side. Mother Nature tending to her mushrooms on one side. And a phallus on the other side (oops!).

Yes I know, I paint a lot of mushrooms. I like them. So do Estonians. Check out this link if you want to read more! Estonia is a mushroom paradise, 3700+ species. Estonia is also the place where I saw these classic red mushrooms (amanita muscaria 🍄) for the first time in real life!!!! http://www.estonica.org/en/Nature/Flora_and_fauna/Fungi/
